WATER SAFETY

Water is meant for splashing, swimming, and fun—but it’s also powerful and unpredictable.

At OCFA, we’re committed to keeping you and your loved ones safe in and around water – at home, by the pool, or out in nature. Our firefighters and safety educators deliver year-round tips and share life-saving resources across the community.

ABCs of Water Safety

Stay safe with the ABCs of Water Safety—a simple and effective approach for everyone:

  • A: Active Adult Supervision – Always supervise children near water. Designate a responsible adult as a water watcher.
  • B: Barriers – Use barriers like pool fences, covers, and alarms to prevent unsupervised access.
  • C: Classes and CPR – Take swimming classes and learn CPR to ensure safety and fast response in emergencies.

Safety Around Water

Water safety is vital wherever you are—pools, beaches, lakes, or oceans. Each setting comes with its own risks, so understanding how to stay safe is key to preventing accidents.

  • Pool Safety: Install self-closing gates and keep safety gear, like life rings, within reach. Ensure everyone, especially children, knows and follows pool rules.
  • Open Water Safety: Be mindful of rip currents, tides, and underwater hazards. Always swim in designated areas monitored by lifeguards.
  • Kids’ Safety: Teach children to swim early and ensure they always use a U.S. Coast Guard approved floatation device when needed.
  • Adult Drowning Prevention: Drowning can happen at any age. Never swim alone, avoid alcohol near water, and be aware of personal health conditions that may increase risk.
